4th day of my caffeine and soda detox

So, I woke up a little late this morning, around 10:30 because I stayed up late last night. It's almost 12 now - my wife doesn't eat breakfast because it hurts her stomach, so over the years that I have known her - I have habitually skipped breakfast.

So, I have identified a problem - now it's time to fix it. My wife and a friend are going to the grocery store to shop for healthier options. I requested salad stuff (of course with low fat dressing) some lunch meat to take with me to school and some high fiber and protein bars also for breakfast. To also balance my breakfast meal, I am going to hardboil one to two eggs in the morning, if I'm not going to eat a breakfast bar.

Eggs are a great source of protein and good cholesterol. They will keep you full for longer and they don't have any artificial sweetener. The only thing you have to watch out for is adding too much salt.

On Monday, my wife and I are going over to Vicksburg to celebrate both of our birthdays and to eat at the Ameristar casino, shop and get away from all the noise.

Well, if I can think of anything else later, then I'll add it.

  1. Hey Seth,

Thank you for the invitation to your blogspot. Not sure that you want any of my advice on loosing weight, but I do know a bit about healthy eating and how I avoid gaining weight.

I never go on a diet plan; I only stick to a certain regimen.

I never skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gives you the energy that you need to get through the rest of the day. You can eat a very light supper, but DO NOT skip breakfast.

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you should make it a very healthy meal. Because I do not have time before work to prepare much of anything, I am in the habit of eating a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios with skim milk. I also drink two cups of coffee -- and I know you are going off caffine, which is a better choice, but not one that I am willing to make or sacrifice.

When you want to loose weight, it is best to avoid eating large amounts of carbohydrates, and concentrate your calorie intake around meat and vegetables, but for me, getting a good dose of carbs from cereal in the morning is important because it gives me an energy boost in the morning and makes sure that I will not be hungry until lunch. On the weekends, I cook an egg in Smart Balance and put it over an English muffin. Or I will cut up fresh fruit into fat free yogurt with a little bit of sugar. You must avoid eggs for the most part as well as saussage, pancakes, syrup, bacon, kids cereal, etc. I also don't go much for breakfast bars; they just don't fill me up and I do not find them satisfying.

I highly suggest only consuming white or raw sugar instead of splenda or Sweet-n-Low. Artificial sweeteners are carcinogenic.

  2. For lunch, during a busy week, I usually eat a meat sandwich on whole grain or multi-grain bread. I only eat one sandwich, with just a little bit of fat-free mayonaise or salad dressing. Ketchup is very sugary and contains a high amount of corn syrup -- which should be avoided at all cost. Sometimes in summer, I'll put a slice of tomato on my sandwich, or in winter, I put a leaf of lettuce on my sandwich.

Other good lunch options include leftovers from the healthy supper meal the night before, low calorie frozen lunches from the grocery store such as "SmartOnes" or "Lean Cuisine", fruit such as bananas or apples. Men are also supposed to eat an ounce of nuts a day avoid the super fatty nuts like peanuts or macadamian nuts. Concentrate on cashews, almonds, which are the best, etc. You should definitely make sure that you are consuming some kind of carb at lunch. Rice is a good option, with steamed vegetables on top and maybe some chicken, etc. Bread on a sandwich is also a healthy choice, provided that the bread is of a high quality and NOT white bread, which is actually quite bad for you. YOU MUST EAT SOME CARB AT LUNCH TO GIVE YOU THE ENERGY FOR THE REST OF THE DAY.

  3. For SUPPER:

On a regular basis, it is ok to eat a small portion of carbs in the evening. A small baked potato, one cup of cooked rice, 1.5 cups of couscous, 1 cup of mediterranean couscous, also called Israeli couscous, wheat bulgar, barley, etc. Even if you do eat a starch/carbs, avoid potatoes. They really hold a lot of energy that you do not need in the evening. A baked potato would make a great breakfast food if you had a hard day's labor ahead.

The evening meal should center around meat and LOTS AND LOTS of vegetables. Learn how to cook all kinds of vegetables. Brussel sprouts, leeks, zucchini, yellow squash, yellow and red bell peppers, limes, broccoli and cauliflower, eggplant, asparagus, butternut squash, etc. The meat portion should be normal, such as 1/2 a large chicken breast, one slice of meatloaf, a portion of fish -- fish should be eaten 2 to 3 times a week as your meat. DO NOT FRY the fish... bake it in the oven with a few spices, such as rosemary or Tony's seasoning.

My favourite kind of rice is Basmati rice. If vegetables have to be stir-fried, use olive oil. It is best to avoid oils that are solid at room temperature, such as butter, Crisco, or even margerine. Also, I perfer the rich and fruity olive oil, as it adds more flavor than the extra virgin, yuck. Also, use salt sparingly. It is good for you, but does make you retain water. Too much salt is definitely bad for the heart.

As far as exercise goes, I hate it. I joined a gym last fall and haven't gone but about 4 times, so I'm not really one to talk about what to do as far as working out. I also wanted to just exercise for the sake of feeling better, and one of the best machines that I found was the ELLIPTICAL, which reduces the impact on your knees and spine while you walk/run. It is also great cardio exercise. Just remember with exercise that it is best to do a little at a time and work your way up to about an hour of exercise each day. Scientists recommend that humans exercise about 30 minutes a day. Muscle building is unnecessary compaired to cardio exercise.

I have some of my favourite recipes that I can pass along to you if you want. I hope that what I have told you here helps a little bit. Best of luck.
